Beginner Sewing Project Class: Instructor: Amanda Hooper 1st Class Outline:
Introduction & Summary of course (each participant will write down one thing they want to learn from the class)
Thread machines & wind bobbins
Measure yourself and how to read a pattern envelope
Understanding patterns & pattern marking - chalk, thread markers, transfer paper
Pattern layout - pins and weights
Cutting - scissors and rotary cutter
Interfacing (types) and pressing interfacing
Make patch pockets - 2 different techniques
2nd Class Outline:
Make straps-turning with a safety pin, finger pressing and pressing with an iron, topstitching
Sew on pockets
Seam finishing without a serger - zigzag, pinking shears
Sew facing - press open seams, clipping curves, understitching
Start on hemming
3rd Class Outline:
Finish apron - hemming and final pressing
Other techniques that we may go over if we have enought time: Gathering (dental floss & basting stitch), Buttons and button holes, Zippers
Serger Class Instructor: Amanda Hooper This class is for anyone who would like to learn more or brush up their serger knowledge. As well as learning techniques in this class there will be a small project to take home.
Serger and all parts and accessories and manual
4 cones of different colour serger thread
Notebook and pen or pencil
Fabric scissors and pins
Scrap fabric to serge with (a kit will be provided but please bring extra to play with)
Any other decorative threads or elastic you would like to experiment with (wooly nylon, metallic, etc.)

1st Class: Intro Learn about your serger's parts, controls, maintenance, threading, tension, and stitch length. Start on toque project.
2nd Class: Techniques In this class you learn and try out different useful serging techniques including inside and outside corners, clean seam starts and stops, elastic, gathering, straps and continue sewing toque.
3rd Class: Embellishing In this class you will get to play with various threads, techniques and finishes. You will learn about rolled hem, flatlock and stabilizers.
